What an incredible first week we have shared together! Each day, our vibrant campus has been alive with beaming smiles—students and teachers alike radiating excitement for the year ahead. 

The campus echoed with joyful reunions as friends reconnected after summer, while new students quickly felt the warmth of our community. In every classroom, the energy has been electric, with teachers and learners diving into lessons with enthusiasm and curiosity.

Dear UISG UNC, Early Years and Primary Families, 

Welcome to our Xiāo Xi newsletter, which will (usually!) be sent every Friday from the Primary Office. Xiāo Xi means ‘news’ in Mandarin and that’s what we will be sharing with you, news from the week and upcoming events and information.   

What a fabulous week back at school! We’ve had A LOT of smiling faces and laughter around the school and we can’t wait for more.

Naming Updates 

We have had some updates over the summer, and returning parents will begin to see some changes in how we name departments in school. While we are in a period transition, both names will be seen but the aim is fully move to new name. See below for the new names:  

• Section is now Division (eg Primary Division)  
• Years are now Grades (eg Grade 1)  
• Head of Primary now Primary Principal  
• Head of Secondary now Secondary Principal 

ECAs

Please sign up your child on SchoolsBuddy. The first season of ECAs begins on September 1st. 

Parent Passes

We can’t wait to have more parent events on campus. To ensure smooth entry into school, please make sure to wear your yellow parent pass.  

Any parent who does not already have a parent pass should email reception at parentpass@uisgz.org to organise one. 

Grade 3 – 5 Student Passes

From the Parent/Student handbook:  

12.13.2 Student Passes for Grades 3-5: Walking to/from School 三至五年级学生走路接送卡  

Parents may request a student pass allowing Grade 3 – 5 students to enter and leave school unaccompanied by an adult. This is usually for students living in the neighboring area that wish to leave through Gate 3 or 5.  

家长可以申请学生走路接送卡，并同意允许三至五年级的学生在没有成人陪同的情况下进出学校规定的门口。这通常是为住在学校附近地区的学生准备的，他们被允许能从 3 门或 5 门进出上学或者放学。  

To obtain a pass:  

如何办理:  

• Parents must email the primary office or Primary Principal to give written permission for their child to enter/leave gates 3 or 5 unaccompanied following the normal school operating hours. 家长必须通过发送电子邮件到小学办公室或小学校长处，以书面许可他们的孩子在上学或者放学时间内同意无人陪同进入/离开学校的 3 或 5 门。  

The request should include: 要求包括以下内容: 

• The full name of the child and grade level, 请提供孩子的全名和班级  
• The gate that will be used, 想申请哪个门口进出  
• The home address that the child will be walking to/from, 您的家庭住址 
• Applicable dates that the pass will be valid for (i.e.semester1), 学生走路接送卡的有效期(即一个学期)  
• Emergency name & contact number, 紧急联系人姓名与电话号码  
• Full name of the parent requesting the pass. 家长需提供您的全名 
• Reception/Facilities will create a pass and inform security accordingly, 由前台人员制卡/并告知保安人员  
• The Primary Principal reserves the right to refuse or revoke a student pass based on inappropriate or unsafe behavior, 小学校长有保留拒绝或撤销如学生有不适当或不安全行为的权利。  
• Students under Grade 3 will not be granted a student pass and must be collected by an adult from school, 小学三年级以下的学生将不允许办理，并且必须由一名成年家长来取卡 
• Once students leave the school gates, the parent/guardian accepts full responsibility for the child(ren). 一旦学生离开学校门，家长/监护人将承担对孩子的全部责任。  

Student Expectations: 学生须知:  

• Must stay on the paths and ensure they walk home, 必须按规定路线走路回家  
• The pass will only apply to the child listed and not friends, 学生走路接送卡仅由限本人 
• Should not litter or cause unrest in the community, 保持好校园整洁并遵守纪律  
• Leave school at 3:20 or 5pm on ECA days and go straight home, 请在下午3 点 20 分放学时间/ECA 活动日下午 5 点结束后准时回家  
• May not remain on campus past 3:20 unless they are in an ECA, 不得在下午 3 点 20 分放学后还逗留学校，除非有 ECA 活动日  
• Cannot enter the tennis courts or swimming pool under any circumstances. 在任何没有得到允许的情况下都不能进入网球场或游泳池。

Parent Communication 

We value all communication we get from parents. Communication is extremely important for an ongoing partnership to best support children. If you have feedback or concerns, please contact me or the teachers any time. This can be in any language you feel most comfortable in. 

Please check that you can access ManageBac and Schools Buddy, if you can’t, contact the Primary Office for help primaryschooloffice@uisgz.org. 

For the well-being of all, we will respond within 24 hours, on weekdays, between the hours of 7am and 5pm unless it is an urgent situation. Thank you for your understanding on this. 

Parent Information Sessions

Parents are invited to join the class Parent Information Sessions. These sessions will be run by the grade level homeroom teachers. This is a great opportunity for parents to meet the homeroom teachers in person and see the classroom. 

Here are the dates for these sessions:  

• K – K3: Tuesday 19th August, 11:20am-12:00pm
• Grade 1 – 3:  Wednesday 20th August, 13:40 – 14:25
• Grade 4 & 5: Tuesday 19th August, 8:15am – 9:00am

Parent Power-Ups Sessions

As an IB school, we strongly believe in lifelong learning and that everyone is a learner. Which is why we are passionate about our parents also being learners.   

Last year, we noticed that our parent workshops did not work and so we are making some changes to try to share our expertise with you and encourage all our parents to be learners.   

So, no more parent workshops, but we are introducing ‘Parent Power-Ups’, short sessions attached to an event already happening in school. No need to come on a different day, just come a little earlier or stay a little longer to learn something new.   

We had a great turnout today for the first Parent Power-Up session for G3 parents. See the posters below for next weeks’ sessions: 

Swimming

K – G5 and UNC swimming lessons will be starting very soon, keep an eye for a message from the PE teachers to learn more.

家长助力会议

作为一所IB学校，我们坚信终身学习，每个人都是学习者。正因如此，我们热衷于让家长也成为学习者。 

去年，我们注意到家长工作坊的效果不佳，因此我们正在做出一些调整，尝试与大家分享我们的经验，并鼓励所有家长成为学习者。 

因此，我们不再举办家长工作坊，而是推出“家长助力会议”，这些课程是与学校现有活动相关的简短课程。无需另选日期，只需提前到场或多待一会儿，就能学到新知识。 

今天，我们为G3家长举办的首届“家长助力会议”取得了圆满成功。请见下方海报，了解下周的课程安排：

August 18-22 (Week 2B) 

The week started with our Welcome back assembly

New UISG Secondary teachers were introduced and warmly greeted by the students 

Then straight into learning together… 

As well as welcoming everyone back to school, my main message in the assembly was to get students thinking about how there is an I in Team. This is an encouragement for all students to get involved, to take part, and to work positively to support everyone else in their team. 

The ECA (extra-curricular activity) Fair took place on Thursday, with students having a chance to see the different ECAs on offer and talk with the activity sponsor. We are hoping to see LOTS of Secondary students signing up for ECAs for this first session. The sign-ups finish by the middle of next week. Thank you to Mr. Ryan, our Athletics and Activities Director for organising this. 

Grade level information sessions – Monday August 25th, 3:35 – 4:45

We hope that as many parents as possible will join us for the Grade level information sessions on Monday August 25th. These sessions will give you a chance to connect with the homeroom teachers and also with other parents in the same Grade level. The sessions will start in the MFH at 3:35. This early connection with the homeroom teachers helps to set your children up for success this year – the partnerships with parents is a key part of our High Quality Learning definition, “A strong home – school partnership strengthens student engagement and enables teachers and parents to guide students to be independent lifelong learners.”

除了欢迎大家回到学校，我在集会上的主要讲话内容是让学生们思考“团队”（Team）这个词里有个“我”（I）。这是鼓励所有学生积极参与，踊跃投入，并积极努力支持团队中的其他人。 

课外活动展会于周四举行，学生们有机会了解各类课外活动，并与活动赞助方交流。我们期待在此次活动中能看到众多中学生报名参加课外活动。报名截止日期为下周中。感谢我们的体育与活动主管 Mr. Ryan 组织此次活动。 

年级信息说明会 – 8 月 25 日星期一下午 3 :35 – 4:45

我们希望尽可能多的家长参加 8 月 25 日星期一举行的年级信息说明会。这些说明会将为您提供一个与班主任以及其他同年级家长交流的机会。说明会将于3:35在 MFH 开始。与班主任的早期联系有助于您的孩子在本学年取得成功——与家长的合作是我们高质量学习定义中的关键部分，“强大的家校合作关系能增强学生的参与度，并使教师和家长能够引导学生成为独立的终身学习者。”
