Dr. Daniel Mullen | Head of School 校长
Dear UISG Families,
A big shoutout to our exceptional UISG athletes and coaches as the ACAMIS Volleyball tournament wraps up this weekend! What a great way to end the week, hosting other international schools from across China in this culminating ACAMIS event. Go Wolves!
Additionally, we are excited to announce that the Book Fair will take place on November 7-8! This is a wonderful opportunity to encourage our students’ love for reading and to support our school library. Please mark your calendars and encourage students to explore the fantastic selection of books available.
Don’t forget to support our talented musicians during the ISMAG Piano Competition this Wednesday. Let’s cheer them on as they highlight their skills and passion for music! We also invite all parents to join us for the Mother Tongue workshop focused on “Empowering Parent Book Clubs” next week. This workshop aims to provide resources and strategies for parents to foster a love of reading in their children’s native languages. Thank you for your continued support and engagement in our school community. Let’s make it a fantastic week!
Yours in Education,
Dr. Daniel Mullen

EAL Updates
The EAL team have been working hard to review, evaluate and adapt our approaches to supporting students with EAL challenges. The results of this review included the decision to reassess students who have shown a possible need for additional support, and creating structures and groups to allow for further support to occur throughout the week.
What this means for our students…Some of our students will newly be in EAL or will be back in EAL to receive support. Support could be in one or more of the four areas: Speaking, Listening, Reading, Writing.
Receiving EAL support is NOT a negative thing or forever. The changes simply mean we are offering more students support that could benefit from it. This is a positive change in our EAL approaches.
If you have any questions, please let me know.
Conflict Resolution
I wanted to share part of an email that was sent out to year 2 families this week, it is an important message for everyone (thank you Mr Paul for putting this together):
The issue of being hit by others was brought up by a student. We discussed the right way to deal with getting hit. Many students said they would hit the other student back. Many believed this to be the right thing to do, with some saying they have been taught this is the best way to protect yourself.
We all listened to each other and it was a very useful, open and respectful conversation. I said to the kids that it is not okay to hit people, even if somebody has hit you first. Violence makes problems bigger, not smaller. I explained that, sometimes it might happen that you want to hit back or think you must but in school we are learning the best ways to resolve conflicts are to use words and not violence. I assured the kids, and I want to assure you as parents, that the school is a safe place where there is always an adult who is nearby and can help you if you need it.
So, the right thing to do is to use words to tell the other person to “stop”. Then, get help from a teacher immediately by going to them or, if needed, shouting for them. I described to the children the idea that when you hit back, you have also done something wrong and that 2 wrongs don’t make a right.
I hope this message helps you to have a healthy conversation about resolving conflicts with your kids at home. It would be great if we can be on the same page with how we are teaching the children to resolve conflicts.
