Please join us for fun activities like our Book Character Dress-Up Parade next Friday morning at 8:45 am. At the same time, we are supporting our DP and MYP students asthey take important practice exams this week. I wish them all great success!

A Seoul Reunion: Celebrating Alumni Journeys
This week, our Board Director and Chair of the UEF Board, Ms. Dorothy Wong, visited Seoul, South Korea. Amidst a busy schedule, she made time to reconnect with two alumni: James (UISG, ’25) and Jessica (UISZ, ’20). It was wonderful to hear about their journeys — James is now pursuing a degree in nursing, while Jessica is building her career in finance. We love seeing our graduates thriving!

Discovering How People Have Different Roles in the Community

Our K1 students are deep into their Unit of Inquiry, “How We Organize Ourselves,” exploring the central idea: People have different roles in the community.
Our inquiry launched with an exciting discovery! Using an aerial map of Guangzhou, the children looked closely at our local area. To their surprise, they identified a fire station right next to our school! This sparked our first visit, where our future community helpers explored the fire trucks, tried on the heavy uniforms, and learned about the firefighters’ important roles and tools.

Our exploration didn’t stop at the school gate. We realized that community helpers are all around us, even within our own school! We visited our wonderful security guard, who was incredibly helpful. He showed us his tools, let us try on parts of his uniform, and talked about his important role in keeping our school safe. It was a wonderful moment of becoming aware that our school is a hub of community helpers.

Building on these experiences, this week’s focus turned to health services. We had a special visit from a Dentist Victor from 广州博恩口腔门诊部, who kindly checked our teeth and taught us about the important tools he uses to care for our smiles.

DENTAL CHECK-UPS
We are only in the second week of our unit, and the real-world connections are already flourishing. Our classroom is transforming into a hub of inquiry, supported by visits from our Chinese language specialist to ensure every child can engage deeply as we explore various roles.

The adventure continues! Next week, we’re off on another field trip for hands-on play, focusing on the tools and uniforms that define different community roles.
We look forward to sharing more of our journey with you. Please enjoy the photos from our map investigation, our visits with the fire station, our school security guard, and the dentist, as well as moments of language support in the classroom.

Writing Across Grades: A Celebration of Young Authors

This week primary students connected for a writing celebration assembly. This is our second assembly this year to celebrate how our students are developing as writings. Students were engaged and excited to share their writing and their process with others. It’s a wonderful opportunity for different aged students to connect and share together, give praise and feedback to each other and see how writing might look as they move up in the school.

Harmony in Unity: A Day of Song and Connection

On January 20, the UISG primary choir went to AISG to join other school choirs for Sing Up. This was a full day of singing, playing, and performing together. Our students had a wonderful time making music with friends from all around Guangzhou, and our concert went beautifully. UISG sang Al Shlosha D’Varim by Allan Naplan, and the concert closed with a very fitting mass-choir performance of Sisi Ni Moja (We are one) by Jacob Narverud. We were all impacted by the power of hearing 167 primary voices singing together! Thank you to all of our choir members for contributing to such a wonderful day, and thank you to Ms. Jessie and Ms. Shannon for making the arrangements to get us there.

Grade 1 How We Express Ourselves End of Unit Celebration

To celebrate the end of our “How We Express Ourselves” unit, our creative Grade 1 students proudly presented their handmade communities and cities—built entirely from recycled materials! Each model was thoughtfully designed and included signs, symbols, and logos that served important purposes—whether to guide us, warn us, or regulate our behavior. The children confidently explained the meaning behind each element, showing a deep understanding of how visual communication shapes our world. It was a joyful and inspiring event, with teachers, K3, and Year 2 classes joining us to celebrate this meaningful learning journey!

Grade 8 Theatre: Bringing Tableaux to Life on Campus
Grade 8 Theatre classes have completed their first unit on ‘tableau vivant.’ Last week, students performed flash mob-style shows across campus and presented their works on stage.

The unit began with physical control training and a workshop analyzing historical photographs. In groups, students researched the genre, selected artworks with matching music, and collaboratively brought them to life through frozen poses on stage.
Performances were held at various campus locations. Thank you to the staff and classes who attended, witnessing our students demonstrate focus and overcome distractions through their performances.
Luka Lesson: A Journey into Spoken Word
This week the halls of UISG pulsed with a new energy, sparked by Australian-Greek spoken word poet Luka Lesson‘s transformative visit. Over two days, he acted as a mentor, profoundly engaging students.

For Grade 11 students analyzing his work, his presence turned textual study into a vibrant dialogue. Through voluntary workshops, he created a safe space for students of all language levels to explore identity and heritage through poetry, often blending English with their mother tongues.

The visit culminated in a courageous community of new voices, proving poetry’s power for personal expression beyond the classroom.
Celebrating Linguistic Diversity: International Mother Tongue Day

On Wednesday, Secondary Division held a vibrant International Mother Tongue Day celebration, initiated and led by secondary students. The event fostered cultural exchange through student-led country research, interactive presentations, and a lively festival featuring performances and cultural booths. Primary students and parents joined the final session, creating a true community experience. The event raised over 3,500 RMB for charity and demonstrated students’ creativity, leadership, and commitment to intercultural understanding.
