Utahloy students participated in the Shenzhen round of the World Scholar’s Cup on December 6 and 7, bringing energy, teamwork, and strong academic performance to a vibrant international competition. Under the guidance of lead coach Ms. Priyanka Pal and assistant coaches Xochitl Gonzalez and Hunt Luker, the students represented their school with enthusiasm and a commitment to cross-disciplinary learning. The event provided an arena where curiosity, collaboration, and intellectual risk-taking were rewarded, and Utahloy students seized the opportunity to grow both academically and personally.
Preparation for the Shenzhen round involved months of study, practice, and team-building. Students practiced collaborative writing and built strategies for the Scholars’ Bowl and Debate rounds while also developing quick-recall abilities and stamina for long competition days. The teams emphasized resilience and reflection, encouraging students to learn from practice debates and mock tests and continually refine their teamwork and communication skills.

At the competition, Utahloy had ten teams comprising thirty students. Across the two days, participants engaged in four primary WSC activities: the Team Debate, Collaborative Writing, the Scholar’s Challenge (multiple-choice tests), and the Scholars’ Bowl (fast-paced team quiz). Each format demanded a different blend of skills: structured argumentation and public speaking in debate; succinct, creative, and evidence-based writing in collaborative tasks; deep content knowledge and time-pressured decision-making in the Scholar’s Challenge; and rapid recall, teamwork, and strategy in the Scholars’ Bowl. Utahloy students demonstrated versatility across these formats, showcasing both individual strengths and cohesive team dynamics.

The results reflected both preparation and persistent effort. Utahloy teams collectively earned a remarkable tally of awards—126 gold and 77 silver medals—alongside 9 trophies, highlighting strong individual performances and effective collaboration. A standout achievement came from the team of Varlamova Marharyta, Jiang Chiu Wa, and Chen Yanxi, who secured first place in the regionals. Additionally, Xarina Zaqtan was selected to participate in the public debate, an honor that showcases exemplary speaking and persuasive skills. Notably, all ten Utahloy teams qualified for the Global Round, advancing from a field that included 144 teams and 432 students from many different schools.

Beyond medals and advancement, the Shenzhen round enriched students’ learning in meaningful ways. Participants gained confidence in public speaking, honed research and writing techniques, and learned to synthesize knowledge across history, science, literature, and the arts. They practiced listening and respectful rebuttal in debates, developed time management strategies for multi-event days, and experienced the camaraderie of shared goals and mutual support. Coaches fostered a reflective culture: after each competition segment, students debriefed to identify strengths and areas for growth, turning each result into a learning opportunity.

As Utahloy teams prepare for the Global Round, they carry forward lessons of collaboration, curiosity, and resilience. The Shenzhen experience stands as a testament to what committed students and dedicated coaches can achieve together in a competitive, intellectually rich environment.
