As part of their “Sharing the Planet” unit, Year 3 students have been learning about natural resources, the impact of human choices on the environment, and what we can do as responsible care takers of the Earth. To bring this learning to life, last week students and teachers took a trip to Silver Forest Eco Farm. After arriving and having a quick snack, we went outdoors where the farm offered lots of sights, sounds and smells that made for an engaging and exciting experience outside the city. We listened carefully to the detailed process of making compost from our hosts. Then, we split into groups to get all our compost materials prepared. The Year 3 student’s great communication and social skills were on display as each group then worked as a team to create the layers of compost. After a morning full of hard work and getting our hands dirty, it was time for a delicious freshly cooked lunch, made with produce from around the farm.Later, we said goodbye to our wonderful hosts at Silver Forest and came back to campus with new knowledge and experience to help us cultivate compost better ourselves. We even had a generous offering of compost made by the folks at Silver Forest to help boost the compost growing at UISG. Many students commented on how they felt “Tired, but in a ‘that was a good day’s work” kind of way. Thank you from Year 3 to the people at Silver Forest Eco Farm for what was a very rewarding and educational day out !
