New this year, UISG is adding a monthly “Coffee Morning” which is a more informal opportunity to connect with the Secondary school. Each Coffee Morning will have a focus element, as well as time for a discussion of general matters in the Secondary school. The first Coffee Morning, on Friday September 27th, focused on Design.
In Design, students learn new skills, create, share and discuss ideas, test prototypes, give and receive feedback, and display their work.
Design
During the Coffee Morning session, parents had the chance to chat with and hear from Mr. Toppings, the Head of Design, and Pei Ying Cheong, a year 12 DP Design Technology student. After touring the design classrooms, workshops and exhibition spaces, Pei Ying shared her design of a programmable death education kit meant to prepare children for the loss of a loved one. Pei Ying also presented a prototype of a modular hand prosthesis for children.
In addition, Mr. Toppings walked parents through a mini lesson in innovation, in which parents were challenged to redesign classroom stools to better meet the needs of students. Parents had the opportunity to experience a design lesson the way their children do and before leaving also had the chance to ask questions and give feedback on the session. More information on the next Coffee Morning will be shared soon. We look forward to seeing you there!
