Friday 13 October 2023 was a busy day for the Performing Arts department, featuring student performers from all three programmes: PYP, MYP and DP.
At 10:30 our DP Music students took to the stage in the Admin Hall; however, two hours earlier the Junior Choir (Year 1 to 3 students) opened the morning Whole School Assembly, and the Year 10 Theatre students closed the assembly with a performance of selections from their Tadashi Suzuki Non-Western Theatre Style Demonstration (which you may have read about in the 28 September ‘Secondary MYP Theatre Performances’ post).
Friday’s DP Music Recital was the first recital (concert) of the academic year, which counts as a DP internal assessment towards the ‘Presenting Music’ portfolio component.
Our three Year 12 (DP2) pianists presented four works, two of which were movements from Beethoven’s famous ‘Pathetique’ sonata (Piano Sonata No. 8 in C minor, Op.13). The other pieces were the beautiful piano transcription by Sgambati of Gluck’s Melody/Aria from the opera Orfeo, and the exciting anime solo piano version of Orito’s 鳥の詩 Tori no Uta (Bird’s Poem).
This DP Music Recital saw the debut performance from our Class of 2025 Year 11 (DP1) violinist, who performed GEM’s cover of the famous BEYOND song, 喜歡你 (I Like You) by 黃家駒 (Wong Ka Kui), adding to the wonderful diversity of the programme.
Our student musicians were supported by an eager audience, including their Group 6 Arts and Year 11 Chinese classmates and teachers, an attentive Year 4 class, and leadership from across UISG.
