Last week the Year 10 Theatre class transformed the Admin Hall into a ‘theatre in the round’ through their Non-Western Theatre Style Demonstration: a performance of Tadashi Suzuki’s
10 walks and 4 basic positions. With confidence and poise, the actors captivated their audience, who included their Year 10 peers, a Year 6 class and UISG staff. The full Admin Hall floor space was used as the audience was transported through this physical example of modern Japanese theatre.
The Semester 1 Year 8 Theatre classes are completing their first unit, exploring the genre of ‘tableau vivant’. This week saw them take to the stage to present their ‘living pictures’.
Students individually researched this historic theatre ‘tableau vivant’ genre, selected paintings depicting four, five and six people, analyzed the possible costumes needed, and matched a selected painting to their own chosen background music. After forming a performance group, the group selected one painting, completed a further analysis, and brought the painting to life on stage.
Performances took place in the sixth-floor Theatre ‘black box’ space with an audience of UISG staff and empathetic Year 8 peers, admiring the fact that our young actors could showcase their strategies to overcome distractions and remain focused for a 2-minute performance.
